When we get mad at them for chewing their sleeves, for biting their nails, for running away from a formation, for coloring outside the lines, for playing with their food, or using colors everywhere, why are we really mad?
It might be better to take a pause and wonder if it’s them or its us. Kids are learning the ways of the world. And the ways aren’t the right always necessarily – it’s just the way it turned out. As they learn the mores, it’s natural for them to test the limits, to challenge the diktats, to pressure the understanding.
Actually, we should be mad if they are not doing that. It may be that the people around are frowning, but why should we care? I am almost certain these small nits aren’t going to turn into a character trait. So why bother?
Let them run free? Let them run wild? It’s just another discarded cloth. A fresh paint here. A broken handle there. What’s these compared to the free spirit that can run wild and learn its own indomitable spirit?
